Minister Ambrose Highlights Harper Government's Commitment to Innovation at Polytechnics Canada's Student Showcase in Alberta

EDMONTON, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - Nov. 14, 2012) - Today, the Honourable Rona Ambrose, Minister of Public Works and Government Services and Minister for Status of Women, highlighted the Harper Government's commitment to bolstering innovation in Canada at an event showcasing applied research projects in support of innovation in industry at Polytechnics Canada's Seventh Annual Student Applied Research Showcase

"I commend the student innovators from across Canada whose outstanding work is being recognized today." said Minister Ambrose. "Our Government is committed to bolstering Canadian innovation by continuing to support the people and ideas that will produce tomorrow's breakthroughs and keep our economy growing."

The event highlighted successful applied research projects being conducted by students in support of innovation. Polytechnics Canada advocates for building a stronger economy through enhanced innovation and productivity. This year's showcase was co-hosted by the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT). Designed 50 years ago to meet the demands of Alberta's industries, NAIT is one of the largest apprenticeship trainers in Canada.

Minister Ambrose took the opportunity to outline the Public Works and Government Services Canada-led Canadian Innovation Commercialization Program (CICP), created to bolster innovation in Canada's business sector. The program is managed by the Office of Small and Medium Enterprises (OSME). Its objective is to help companies bridge the pre-commercialization gap for their innovative goods and services by awarding them contracts to test their innovations within the Government of Canada. Through CICP's support for innovation designed in Canada, Canadian businesses get one step closer to moving their innovations into domestic and international markets.

"This helps companies test their products in realistic contexts, and to secure that all-important first sale. It helps departments and agencies to solve their problems using Canadian technology, supporting economic growth and technology. I think of it as the ideal win-win," stated Minister Ambrose.
