Ontario makes work health and safety a priority

TORONTO

The Ontario government is taking extra steps to improve the occupational health and safety system by following through on some recommendations made by the Expert Advisory Panel on Occupational Health and Safety.

The panel made recommendations which include mandatory workplace health and safety awareness training for workers and supervisors and ensuring that vulnerable workers and small businesses have input in creating health and safety policies.

“The health and safety of workers is a priority for our government,” said Linda Jeffrey, Minister of Labour in a statement. “We want to ensure all workers return home safe and sound at the end of each workday. Prevention and enforcement are key elements in fulfilling this commitment.”

The government also plans to launch a public consultation on proposed new regulations that would require employers to conduct mandatory occupational and safety training for its employees.

Ontario will also raise awareness and education on occupational health and safety by launching new resource materials.
