Specialist skills program in Ontario expands

TORONTO

The Ontario government has announced the expansion of the Specialist High Skills Majors (SHSM), which allows students to focus on a career path that matches their skills and interests while achieving a high school diploma.

The program will include 4,000 more students so next year, 38,000 students will be able to participate in the program at 670 schools across Ontario.

While studying towards their Ontario Secondary School Diploma, students will complete a specific bundle of 8-10 courses in the student’s selected field; earn valuable industry certifications including first aid and CPR qualifications; and gain important skills on the job with employers. It is offered in 19 different sectors.

Grade 11 and 12 students in a construction major will get earn a bundle of 10 credits, including four construction major credits and two cooperative education credits where students gain workplace experience. They will also receive certification and training courses in basic health and safety, first aid, CPR, hazardous materials and fall protection.

Programs like the Specialist High Skills Major have helped the graduation rate increase to 82 per cent, from 68 per cent in 2003-04.
