Brazilian dam contract to include $830-million environment levy
BRASILIA, Brazil
Brazilian Environment Minister Carlos Minc says the winner of a multibillion dollar bid to build a new Amazon hydroelectric dam must pay $830 million to protect the environment and people living nearby.
Bidding for construction of the Belo Monte dam on the Xingu River that feeds the Amazon River is expected to be intense.
Minc made the announcement Monday. His ministry is expected to grant an environmental license for the dam that is required before the project can be put out to bid.
The dam will be the world’s third largest, behind China’s Three Gorges and the Itaipu dam at the Brazil-Paraguay border. Opponents say Belo Monte will devastate the Xingu’s wildlife and the livelihoods of 40,000 people.
