Vancouver Convention Centre expansion sets new standards for environmental design

With over 400,000 square feet of space, Vancouver convention Centre’s new West Building has turned out to be a showpiece of modern architecture and sustainability. With its breathtaking views of Stanley Park, Burrard Inlet, and the North Shore mountains, the new space captures the essence of Vancouver’s west coast landscape. Although not without controversy — the project came in more than $400 million over budget — the new convention centre sets new standards for environmental design.

The new facility incorporates a number of key design elements for buildings of this scale. For example, the six-acre green roof provides a home for 20 varieties of plant life, and is pollinated by local bee hives. What’s more, the roof was designed to imitate a gulf island beachfront to provide a nesting ground for local birds. As well, 40 per cent of the building is suspended over water with the foundation specifically designed to recreate a natural shoreline for marine life. Finally, the seawater heating and cooling system makes the convention centre one of the most energy efficient buildings in Vancouver.

While the sustainability elements are impressive, the facility also incorporates modern technology for those attending events at the convention centre. Touch screen monitors are placed throughout the centre for visitors to check schedules, find rooms, and locate events.

For those not comfortable using such devices, monitors are found throughout the facility, providing up-to-date conference and event information. Another nice touch is the high-definition flat-screen monitors found throughout the facility explaining the green elements of the centre’s design.

With the total cost closing in on a billion dollars, a significant team was assembled to design and construct the facility. Architects for the project included Vancouver’s MCM Partnership, who collaborated with DA Architects and Planners. Seattle-based LMN Architects were also part of the design process. Construction Management was provided by PCL Constructors and Unitech Construction Management. The project was completed in April 2009, and was built to LEED standards.
