IPC Energy considers Milford location for future wind farm
Mississauga-based ICP Energy is investigating the possibility of a wind farm in Milford. A consultant should be selected by summer 2009 to complete an environmental assessment for the project.
Avalon Consulting Professionals of Ontario, LLC worked with IPC Energy to release a Notice of Commencement for the screening process of the Environmental Assessment, but will not be participating in the project in any other way.
To be located in South Marysburgh Township, in the area of Hill Top Road and Brewer Street, the $160-million project will feature up to 75 wind turbines on privately-owned participating properties. From base to hub, the turbines will stand 80 to 100 meters high (excluding blade height) and will create two megawatts of power each. White Pines Wind Farm Project is expected to have a capacity of approximately 150 megawatts in total.
In a news release, IPC Energy stated that “areas found to be environmentally constrained and more densely populated areas such as Milford and shoreline area of South Bay [in South Marysburgh Township] will be avoided.”
A summary table on the company’s website shows the wind turbines will be located
• 100 meters from the closest residence (to the east);
• 150 meters from the closest apartment building (to the south);
• 200 meters from the closest nursing home (to the west); and
• 260 meters from the closest residence (to the north).
Three meta towers have been set up to test wind speeds at the site and have had good results so far. The duration of the testing has not been determined but current findings show this is a viable project.
The specific turbine model to be used has not been selected, but IPC Energy will select a model once the environmental assessment has been completed. IPC Energy will determine the design and construction schedules once the environmental assessment is completed.
A power purchase agreement for this project has not been sought. IPC Energy will begin negotiations for a power purchase agreement once the environmental assessment is complete. Should a power purchase agreement not be reached, the project will be placed on hold until one can be obtained.
IPC Energy is a wpd AG partner and works with landowners, municipalities and other partners to develop, build and operate wind energy projects across Canada. They believe wind power is a safe economic alternative to other forms of energy creation.
