Group proposes to build private university campus at Whistler

The host city of the 2010 Olympics may one day be home to a $50-million private university campus across from the Olympics Athletes’ Village on what is currently known as the Alpha Lands.

The proposed project was presented to the Resort Municipality of Whistler by a for-profit organization called University Canada West. The group is headed by former University of Victoria president David Strong.

Strong is pursuing the idea with Vancouver landowner and developer John Zen of OKA Holdings Ltd. Zen owns the 31-hectare Alpha Lands parcel and the proposed campus would take up a small portion of site.

The university would offer courses related to the hospitality, tourism, leadership skills and business.

Holland Barrs Planning Group has prepared a conceptual plan, but an architect has not been officially appointed to begin the formal design of the facility.

University Canada West is also behind the plans for another private campus in the Comox Valley, part of the Sage Hills development.
