Assiniboine Community College prepares to start construction of Len Evans Centre

Assiniboine Community College will expand its trade apprenticeship opportunities by relocating the college to the former Brandon Mental Health Centre facililty on First St. North.

The Len Evans Centre for Trades and Technology is named after a former MLA who served in Brandon East for 30 years.

The total cost for the expansion project is estimated at $45 million, and construction costs are estimated at $36 million of the total.

Phase one of the three-phase project is complete.

Phase two involves restoring the existing Pine Ridge Building, and linking it with two new buildings to form a quadrant.

The two new buildings will offer another approximately 90,000 square feet of space in total.

One of the new buildings will house the heavy-duty wing, and the other will house the construction trades wing.

By the time the project is complete, all the buildings will meet LEED Silver certification standards.

Construction of phase two should be underway in August 2008. It is anticipated that this portion of the project will be completed in fall 2010.

The main firms involved with phase two are Cibinel Architects Ltd. (design); Akman Construction Ltd. (general contractor); and ASH Management Group Inc. (project manager).

Phase three will involve relocating the remaining Brandon-based programs to the Parkland building.

Included in the phase three-relocation will be student housing; a joint-use outdoor amphitheatre for the college and the community; a centre for innovation in agriculture and environment; and an athletics and wellness facility.

Phase three of this project is expected to proceed in a few years.
