Infrastructure Ontario selects Darlington as site of new nuclear plant
Infrastructure Ontario’s Nuclear Procurement Project Request for Proposals (RFP) entered Phase 2 on June 16, 2008, with the selection of Darlington as the site for a new nuclear plant.
The announcement is the latest step in the process to select and build a two-unit nuclear power plant that will help maintain Ontario’s nuclear generation capacity at 14,000 MW.
AREVA NP, Atomic Energy of Canada Limited and Westinghouse Electric Company are the invited Respondents for Phase 2 of the RFP. One of these three companies will be chosen as the preferred vendor by the end of 2008.
The new plant will be operated by Ontario Power Generation and located at its Darlington site. Project construction is expected to create about 3,500 direct construction and engineering jobs between 2012 and 2018.
However, before the shovels can hit the ground, not only must the technology vendor be chosen, the ongoing Environmental Assessment and licensing process must be also completed and financing and contracts negotiated.
Infrastructure Ontario is leading the commercial team that will manage the procurement process.
Other commercial team members include Ontario Power Generation, the Ministry of Energy and the Ministry of Finance.
