Eramosa Engineering Inc.

Lambton Shores beach monitoring program.

The program was initiated to help identify, prior to laboratory testing, the formation of harmful bacteria through predictive modeling using nine different water quality and environmental parameters. The intent is to develop a scientifically sound means to predict, in real time, whether the water is safe for public swimming at one of Ontario’s busiest open water beaches. Client/Owner: Municipality of Lambton Shores.

Nadine International Inc.

Design of fire detection system for Ontario Power Generation.

The utility uses highly volatile coal for producing electricity. Coal is transported from ships to boilers on 44 kilometres of conveyors. Nadine International designed an early warning system which detects fire on moving conveyors and accurately determines its location. This technology is state-of-the-art and the first of its kind. Client/Owner: Ontario Power Generation.

Delcan

Reform & expansion of the Bridgetown port, Barbados.

Delcan completed the overall management and design for one of the largest port expansions in the Caribbean. The $40 million project involved upgrading of the entire facility including container yards, roads, utilities and breakwaters. The project also required construction of shore protection, reconstruction of workshops and gatehouses and extensive reconstruction of all berthing facilities. Client/Owner: Barbados Port Inc.

Building Science and Engineering Award

H.H. Angus & Associates Ltd.

University of Toronto Terrence Donnelly Centre for Cellular and Biomolecular Research.

A first of its kind in Canada, the centre is a highly functional, flexible and technically advanced research facility in genome research. A leader in sustainable design, it showcases natural ventilation and lighting with a double-façade and indoor gardens. Client/Owner: University of Toronto.

Environment Award

Genivar

16th Avenue/ 9th Line trunk sewer project.

Construction and environmental management. This project consists of a 14-kilometre sewer tunnel, at depths ranging from 32 metres to 55 metres, at a capital cost of $128 million. Design and construction challenges included varied ground conditions, vortex drop structures, extensive construction dewatering, and the development and implementation of a comprehensive environmental monitoring and mitigation program. Client/Owner: Regional Municipality of York, McNally/Aecon Joint Venture.

Industry, Energy and Resources Award

Sandwell Consulting Engineers Ltd.

Development of Poraver’s Innisfil manufacturing facility.

Poraver North America Ltd. manufactures lightweight foamed glass beads using glass from Blue Box and other recycling programs. Sandwell synthesized the German process and developed a streamlined, repeatable commercial process for the North American market. The first North American manufacturing facility was successfully completed in Innisfil in October 2007. Client/Owner: Poraver North America Ltd.

Project Management Research and Studies Award

Golder Associates Innovative Applications (GAIA) with Golder Associates Ltd. & City of Barrie.

City of Barrie, Cell 3A re-engineering.

Golder Associates Innovative Applications, working with Golder Associates Ltd., completed a design-build approach for the re-engineering of Waste Cell 3A at the Barrie landfill. Working closely with city officials, GAIA implemented the project from approvals to construction on a tight schedule, while installing one of the first double-liner systems in Ontario. Client/Owner: City of Barrie.

Transportation Award

Hatch Mott MacDonald

Airside and civil engineering for Toronto Pearson Airport Terminal 1.

The terminal development project, phased over eight years, incorporated airside and civil engineering services, aprons, new taxi lanes, enabling works, decommissioning and demolition of some 20 buildings and the provision of passenger boarding bridges and ramp services in support of the new terminal. Client/Owner: Airport Architects Canada/Greater Toronto Airports Authority.
