Airdrie catches Alberta building wave
The City of Airdrie, Alberta saw a record-breaking 168 percent increase in construction value in 2007, totalling $454 million.
“Due to our location in the heart of Alberta’s heated economy, Airdrie experienced an exceptional building year,” says Darryl Poburan, Building Inspections Team Leader. “2008 looks like another record year.”
Airdrie had $270 million in construction value in 2006 and recorded $185.3 million in 2005. A record 11,815 plus permits were applied for in 2007 (9,443 in 2006) and city inspectors completed 23,866 inspections compared to 18,504 in 2006.
“Growth in Airdrie has traditionally occurred around residential development. For the second year in a row commercial and industrial growth was very strong,” says Kent Rupert, Planning and Economic Development Team Leader, City of Airdrie.
“New commercial, office and industrial investment increased by 161 percent in 2007. This provides Airdrie residents with more opportunities to work and shop close to home,” adds Rupert.
The commercial and industrial permits recorded a remarkable increase to approximately $129 million up from $80 million in 2006.
