Ontario concrete industry gears up to celebrate excellence and innovation in awards ceremony

The Ontario concrete industry is gearing up to celebrate excellence and innovation in its 7th annual awards program.

Both cast-in-place and precast concrete projects are eligible in the competition, which is supported by a who’s who of industry associations.

The deadline for submissions is Oct. 4.

To be eligible, projects in part must:
• Be submitted by the registered architect, structural engineer, general contractor or other project team member.
•Highlight the innovative use of concrete as a principal construction element.
•Consist of new construction completed in Ontario within 36 months of the submission closing date.
•Demonstrate creativity and innovation in the application of concrete technology.

Awards are presented in eight categories: architectural merit; architectural flooring or hardscape; structural design innovation; mid to high rise residential; infrastructure; material development and innovation; specialty concrete products/applications, and sustainable concrete construction.

Entries are judged on the basis of architectural merit, creativity, quality of engineering design, innovative construction techniques or solutions, complexity, functionality and end-use suitability.

Awards will be presented Nov. 28 at a banquet during the Concrete Canada tradeshow.

The primary objective of the competition is to raise awareness of concrete as Ontario’s primary construction material and to highlight the hard work and efforts of architects, engineers, contractors and owners who have contributed to the industry’s success.

Last year’s winners included Burlington’s Discovery Landing (architectural merit), the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts (structural design innovation), the Centre for Manufacturing and Design Technologies at Sheridan College (sustainable concrete construction) and the Creditview Road heritage bridge rehabilitation (infrastructure).

Competition supporters include the Ready Mixed Concrete Association of Ontario, the Ontario chapter of the American Concrete Institute, the Ontario Cast-in-Place Concrete Development Council, the Ontario chapter of the Canadian Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute, the Concrete Floor Contractors Association and the Cement Association of Canada.
