TORONTO

Ontario Ministry of Labour inspectors will be conducting an inspection blitz in February of loading docks at transportation and industrial businesses.

In a report from the Infrastructure Health and Safety Association (IHSA), Audrey Birkbeck, provincial specialist with the MOL’s Industrial Health and Safety Program, says hazards in shipping and receiving areas and loading docks may often be overlooked.

These areas can be busy, bustling places with a number of risks that, if not properly mitigated, can cause injury or death.

“We are continuing to see an ongoing number of injuries and fatalities in shipping and receiving areas and in loading docks,” Birckbeck said.

Throughout February, inspectors will be on the lookout for a number of things, including entry and exit of vehicles, positioning and securing of vehicles, movement loading and unloading of vehicles either using mechanical means or through manual material handling.
