Mike Gallagher of Oakville has been re-elected to a fourth term as business manager of Local 793 of the International Union of Operating Engineers.

Gallagher, who has led the local for 12 years now, was re-elected to another four-year term when ballots were counted on Thursday, August 7, 2008.

“I am very pleased with the outcome and the strong mandate that members of Local 793 have given to me, the officers and executive board of our union,” Gallagher said. “We will ensure that this union continues to progress and remains healthy and on stable financial footing into the future.”

“I am honoured that members across the province have once again put their faith in our leadership and we will continue to work on the issues that are important to Local 793 such as health and safety, organizing and negotiating good settlements,” said Gallagher. “We recently updated our strategic plan and also intend to work towards implementing recommendations that came out of that exercise.”

Gallagher originally took over as business manager of the union on Dec. 17, 1996. Prior to that, he was a business rep and then labour relations manager with the local.

He is active on numerous committees and advisory boards dealing with issues such as health and safety, pensions and apprenticeship. He is also an international trustee with the IUOE and past-president of the Construction Safety Association of Ontario.

The following were also elected or acclaimed to Local 793 executive positions: Gary O’Neill, president, Alex Law, vice-president, John Anderson, financial secretary, Joseph Redshaw, treasurer and Richard Kerr, recording-corresponding secretary.

The executive board consists of Wendy Catherwood; Joe Dowdall; Bob Giles; Brian Madigan; Bob McQueen; Bill Thompson. The auditors are William Boyle; Steve Deady and John Monti. The trustees are Wendy Catherwood; Ron Hillis and Bob Turpin. Brad Sisler will be conductor.

“Local 793 members can rest assured that the union once again has a strong and dedicated team in place and we are looking forward to working on behalf of our members,” added Gallagher.

Local 793 of the International Union of Operating Engineers represents thousands of highly-skilled crane and heavy equipment operators across Ontario. The union has a head office, banquet hall and training campus in Oakville, and another training campus in Morrisburg.
