BUFFALO

A University at Buffalo architect’s twisted tower designed to house bats at Griffis Sculpture Park is also meant to raise awareness about a fatal disease threatening them.

Joyce Hwang’s “Bat Tower” stands about 12 feet tall, comprised of five triangular segments stacked on top of one another and joined by steel bolts. The walls of each segment consist of 400 finished plywood panels arranged in a ribbed, accordion-like pattern.

The tower is meant to draw attention to bats and white-nose syndrome, an affliction that has killed more than one million bats in recent years.
