LONDON

More than 10,000 people are working on construction of the Olympic Park and athletes’ village for the 2012 London Games.

Games organizers say 6,243 workers are building the Olympic Park and its major venues, with 4,090 building the adjacent Olympic Village in east London.

Olympic Delivery Authority chairman John Armitt says construction remains on schedule despite the worldwide economic downturn, adding that “in a tough time for the construction industry we are providing jobs for over 10,000 workers ... and remain focused on the finish line.”

More than three quarters of the accommodation in the athletes’ village is structurally complete. The Olympic Village is scheduled for completion in early 2012.
