A turn-of-the century tannery in downtown Kitchener, Ont. has been converted into a state-of-the-art digital media centre to accommodate the region’s technology boom. RAWdesign refurbished the aging infrastructure to allow re-use of major portions of the building.

The $1.6-million renovation by developer Cadan Inc. features 28,000 square feet of public space characterized by large interactive “caves” by Communitech where researchers can use 3D visualization technology to test out new content and programs. The contractor was ZKL Inc.

The building once housed the Lang Tanning Co. The Waterloo region, made famous by communications technology giant Research in Motion, is home to two thirds of Canada’s high tech start-ups.
