Greyhound Canada will soon be on the move to a new $6.3 million passenger bus terminal and cargo facility at the southwest corner of Winnipeg’s James Armstrong Richardson International Airport.

The 20,000-square-foot, steel-framed location is being designed by Stantec Architecture Ltd. The general contractor is Bird Construction Ltd.

Construction is to start in May 2008 and completion by August 2009. Greyhound’s soon-to-be-vacated facility at 487 Portage Avenue has already peaked the interest of the Plug-In Institute of Contemporary Art, who hope to convert the space into affordable housing for both artists and students, some market condominiums, and an art gallery with retail space on the main floor.

Plug In’s proposal is estimated at $20 million and is being reviewed by the University of Winnipeg, co-owner of the existing building.
